Thomas Schüller builds things and writes about them, and does not treat the two as separate occupations. A tool comes out of a question; the next question comes out of building the tool. Whether the object under examination is a machine, a stage, an ecosystem or an argument makes little difference to the method: how does it behave under load, and where does it tip. He works in Vienna, without institutional affiliation, and publishes openly — code, working papers, instruments, each citable with a DOI.

Thomas Schüller works in Vienna, between workshop and laboratory, and treats the distance between the two as smaller than it is usually taken to be. His work begins as often at a machine as at a desk — in engineering and manufacturing, on stage and in event technology, in sound, image and text — and it runs on a single recurring question: how does a system behave under load, and where is the point at which it tips. That question is indifferent to the object. It applies to a component, to a population in nature, to a crowd at an event, to an argument that has to hold.

Thomas Schüller arbeitet in Wien, zwischen Werkstatt und Labor, und hält den Abstand zwischen beidem für kleiner, als er gemeinhin genommen wird. Seine Arbeit beginnt ebenso oft an einer Maschine wie am Schreibtisch — in Technik und Fertigung, auf der Bühne und in der Veranstaltungstechnik, in Ton, Bild und Text — und läuft auf eine wiederkehrende Frage hinaus: Wie verhält sich ein System unter Belastung, und wo liegt der Punkt, an dem es kippt. Diese Frage ist gleichgültig gegenüber ihrem Gegenstand. Sie gilt einem Bauteil, einem Bestand in der Natur, einer Menschenmenge auf einer Veranstaltung, einem Argument, das tragen muss.

The approach is transdisciplinary rather than multidisciplinary: not several fields lined up beside one another, each illuminating a topic from its own corner, but one question passing straight through them. The boundaries between subjects are administrative, not natural — and the artistic work is not decoration alongside the research but part of the same practice, because sound, form and staging are also questions of behaviour under load.

Der Ansatz ist transdisziplinär, nicht multidisziplinär: nicht mehrere Fächer nebeneinander, die ein Thema je aus ihrer Ecke beleuchten, sondern eine Frage, die quer durch sie hindurchgeht. Die Grenzen zwischen den Fächern sind Verwaltungsgrenzen, keine natürlichen — und die künstlerische Arbeit ist keine Zierde neben der Forschung, sondern Teil derselben Praxis, weil auch Klang, Form und Inszenierung Fragen des Verhaltens unter Belastung sind.

The research is privately financed and carried out without institutional affiliation.
